Soft Ride Boots are simply a MUST HAVE for your horse. Pulled shoe, stone bruise, abscess, laminitis and so on. Have these on hand for emergencies. They will save your horse a lot of pain.
Please do NOT retire, adopt out or lease your horse without checking up on them, even at a rescue. Your horse's life depends on you doing your homework! Don't release your horse to a rescue that uses primarily foster programs (how exactly are they regulated and what happens when the foster decides they have changed their mind and want the horse to move out? where does he go?), or a vet research facility (let them experiment on already deceased horses) or college programs (they will be ridden by hundreds of different riders and then face the auction anyway). We have all watched or saved college horses, lesson horses, therapeutic riding horses, pony party ponies, summer camp horses and petting zoo donkeys heading direct to slaughter after a work season. Many of these horses had a caring owner who believed they were placing the horse in a safe environment where children would love on them and they would live a wonderful life. Place a legally binding contract on your horse whether you sell him or adopt him. You must check on your horse in person and often throughout his life. Your horse will thank you.
I found out horses are butchered for human consumption when I was 4yr old. It has been my lifelong intent to help as many horses as I can. Christine Barrett-Distefano
